Charcoal drawing - Conversation - Marty Vreede

Marty Vreede – Printmaker, Typographer and Papermaker
Marty is a senior Fine Arts lecturer at UCOL and founded the Print Workshop at the Quay School of the Arts in Whanganui twenty years ago. He has developed it as a central hub for printmaking in New Zealand. In 2009 he received a Fulbright award and he has also studied papermaking and printmaking in the United Kingdom as a Nuffield Foundation Scholar. A regular exhibitor in NZ and overseas his 2010 series of work, exhibited as ‘Implement of Change ‘at Solander Gallery in Wellington, came from a series of drawings of functional objects held in the Whanganui Museum which attracted him because of their craftsmanship and their inherent aesthetic beauty. "These etchings started their life as charcoal drawings on glass and were then transferred to a zinc plate through a polymer film process. Then the traditional layering of Hard Ground and Aquatint takes the image into a pure state of direct drawing”.
